A trader made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was made public, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from non-public details of the event.

Market Movement in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the period preceding former President Trump stated on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A single trader, which joined the platform recently and made four bets, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a modest bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Trading information shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just 6.5% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet these probabilities had jumped to 11% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the early hours of Saturday, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment right before the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a transaction based on inside information," said a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other individuals also made significant sums from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

A bill put forward on recently aims to prohibit government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in recent years, with traders able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to political events.

This sector were examined under the previous administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting arena.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
